The Great Dictator

4.35 min, digital cinema
Short Film/ Installation
Wellesley, Boston

Reenacting The Great Dictator Speech (Los Angeles, 1940) by Charlie Chaplin from the eye of a female artist, Nadja Verena Marcin addresses the threatening rise of neo-nationalism around the globe as well as the influence potential of the artist in midst of a more politicized world. Applying the male dictator’s mannerism onto her female body – bending gender and what physically represents authoritarianism – gestures mostly reserved to men.
